Bronchitis Testing and Treatments

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes, the airways that carry air to your lungs. It causes a cough that often brings up mucus, as well as shortness of breath, wheezing, and chest tightness. Often developing from a cold or other respiratory infection, acute bronchitis is very common. Chronic bronchitis, a more serious condition, is a constant irritation or inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, often due to smoking.

Symptoms:

▸ persistent cough with mucus
▸ chest pain or discomfort
▸ shortness of breath
▸ wheezing
▸ fatigue
▸ a low-grade fever

When to Call a Doctor:

Call your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms: a fever higher than 101°F (38.3°C), chest pain or discomfort that gets worse when you take a deep breath or cough, coughing up blood or yellow or green mucus, difficulty breathing, or if your symptoms last longer than two weeks.
